About the Podcast

Exploring The Spectrum

If you’ve ever felt that the story we’ve been told about autism is incomplete, you’re in the right place.

Our understanding of autism continues to evolve. Yet despite scientific advances, cultural narratives often remain shaped by outdated, deficit-focused beliefs. Research increasingly shows just how diverse autism truly is—from how it emerges, to how it presents, to what supports help autistic people thrive. With such variation, it’s unlikely that science alone can capture the full picture without the insights of lived experience.

Exploring The Spectrum brings these perspectives together to deepen how autism is understood—recognizing it as a meaningful form of human difference, while also acknowledging that varying levels of support, including biomedical interventions, may be essential for many individuals to truly thrive.

Hosted by Dr. Julia Mirer, the podcast examines the full spectrum of the human condition at the intersection of science, lived experience, culture, and spirituality. Where many conversations lean either toward clinical abstraction or personal anecdote, Exploring The Spectrum bridges both—and adds a third lens: the environments and systems that shape our lives.

The show features thoughtful, non-sensationalized conversations with clinicians, educators, authors, autistic adults, parents, advocates, and researchers. Together, these voices expand public understanding of what autism is, what it is not, and what may need to change in our culture, institutions, and environments to better accommodate differences.

At its core, Exploring The Spectrum invites curiosity over certainty Each episode offers updated language, deeper compassion, and new perspectives that gently challenge what we think we know—honoring nuance, lived experience, and our shared capacity to evolve as new information emerges.

Why “Exploring The Spectrum”?

“Exploring The Spectrum” exists to shift the narrative about autism from a medical paradigm focused on deficit and challenges to a more inclusive paradigm that honors the vast diversity of traits. It honors autistic traits that have moved culture forward throughout history, while exploring the bigger picture implications of autistic burnout and what it may reveal about our environments, food systems, cultures, and social structures.
